1. 1. Mir space station
Mir space station was a Russian space station that remained operational from 1986 to 2001. It was constructed in
space between 1986 to 1996. A wide range of experiments was conducted on Mir. It spent
5519 days in orbit, out of which it remained occupied with human presence for
4592 days. It holds the record of the longest stay of one individual when a cosmonaut
Valeri Polyakov stayed in it for 437 days and 18 hours
continuously.
The space station was placed at a height of
296 km above the earth’s surface. It traveled at a speed of 27,000 km per hour, making 15.7 orbits around earth
per day.
Astronauts from 12 nations visited Mir. This
space station experienced 16 sunrises and sunsets per day.
1. 2. International space station
The international space station has been a
joint effort by several countries including the USA, Russia, Japan, and many European countries. Its construction began in the space in 1998 and was completed in
2012. It is expected to remain operational till 2020 and maybe till 2028. It is
109 meter wide, 51 meters long, and 20 meters high. It can be seen from the earth
with naked eyes. I am 417289 kg in weight and can house six astronauts
at a time. It completed 4789 days on 31 Dec 2011 out of which 4049 days had a human presence. It is the longest human stay in space.
Its height is maintained between 278 km to
460 km above the earth’s surface. It makes 15.7 orbits around the earth in a
day at a speed of 27743km per hour. In 30
years from now would cost around us $
160 billion.
